As the summer travel season begins, the importance of digital wallets in enhancing travel experiences is clear, with three-quarters of U.S. travelers now using them on their trips. Addressing the need for secure digital payment solutions, Visa introduced the emergency digital card replacement service.

Digital wallets have become an integral part of the travel experience for 74% of travelers, especially among the affluent (83%) and millennials (82%). 85% of travelers have used their primary domestic card internationally, reveals the Visa Global Travel Intentions Study.

Lose a credit card while traveling can be a stressful experience, leaving travelers feeling stranded. Visa’s new service aims to alleviate this anxiety by providing a digital card replacement via SMS or email on behalf of card issuers.

Once received, cardholders can authenticate and add the new card to their digital wallet, ensuring quick and secure access to funds.

“We’ve all felt that moment of panic during the holidays: losing a card and feeling like you’re stuck,” she said Kathleen Pierce GilmoreGlobal Head of Issuance Solutions at Visa. “Our new digital emergency card solution addresses these exact issues. It provides instant, secure access to funds for travelers, while also enabling issuers to deliver superior customer service. It’s a win-win situation that demonstrates the power of digital payments to improve experiences for everyone.”

Travel tips

In addition to providing digital card replacements, Visa also offered tips for travelers to maximize their use of digital payments:

  1. Go digital: Preload Visa cards into digital wallets to avoid the hassle of carrying cash.
  2. Stay informed: Enable transaction alerts to monitor spending in real time and detect fraudulent activity early.
  3. Quick card replacement: Report lost cards immediately to take advantage of Visa’s timely digital replacement service.
  4. Notify your bank: Notify your card issuer before traveling to ensure your card works in your destination countries.
  5. Pay in local currency: Choose to pay in your local currency for potentially better exchange rates.

Visa’s digital emergency card replacement is part of its Global customer support services, which supports card issuers with emergency services through a distribution network and established partnerships for rapid card production and delivery across five continents.
